Look at it sitting there… left out there in the cold with no one to pay attention to it; forgotten about.  It looks like it hasn’t been updated for months.

That poor, poor, website news feed.

You know you’ve heard it many times before, and we’ve been saying it to our clients, but it’s important to update your website to let others know what you’ve been doing as a company.  We’ve all been to a site with a news feed that has had the last update dated from last year and wondered if the site is still alive.

So I’ll take this opportunity to briefly discuss why having an updated news feed (do as I say, not as I do) is such a great thing to have for your website, and why it’s good to let people know everything that you or your company is currently up to.

It connects with your audience

Your personality comes through on these posts, creating a rapport with viewers before you even pick up the phone or draft an email.

Your viewers are your audience, and you never know when someone will stumble on your site and decide they just plain like you.  It will be in the personality that your website exudes; the voice that your words take on, and the attitude in the images you use.  What better way to make the right impression than with a stream of information about what you are up to being broadcast to your audience using your “voice”.  Your personality comes through on these posts, creating a rapport with viewers before you even pick up the phone or draft an email; this is your first impression.

It gets rid of the “ghost town” effect

Yep, we know you’re busy; everybody is busy with all aspects of their business and the website usually gets forgotten from time to time.  Updating your news feed performs a very important function though; it helps stave off the feeling that your web site is a “ghost town”.  People will be coming to your website for a variety of reasons, but all of them will notice if your site doesn’t look like it has been updated in a while.  It doesn’t matter if you’re doing exciting and new things offline; for anyone checking your information online, they’ll only know that the last thing exciting that happened was that newspaper article in 2004.

It serves to enhance the most important piece of marketing you have

What is your most important piece of marketing?  Is it your brochure?  Your ad in the phone book?  Your half a page magazine ad?

Why wouldn’t you want to jump at any opportunity to enhance your website?

The answer is none of those.  It is your website.  Your website will at one point or another be viewed by everyone who may or may not want to contact you.  If they are thinking of using your company for anything, they will search for you online.  With this in mind, why wouldn’t you want to jump at any opportunity to enhance your website with more content which is also relevant to your company and industry?

We at Chewie Media think that news feeds are a fantastic way to connect with your audience, update your website, and enhance your online presence.  So love and nurture your news feed; let it grow and it will pay you back.
