What do you do when you have too many ideas?!

As marketers (well, entrepreneurs in general), there seem to be a million different aspects and things to think about. I’m definitely the same way, and sometimes the simple act of getting it down on paper in itself can be a lot! But don’t worry, I have a few handy ideas for when you have idea overwhelm and need to get the ball rolling.

Step 1: Get It On Paper

First things first – you need to brain dump it. Grab a piece of paper, it doesn’t have to be fancy. Treat this like a stream of consciousness and get it all out, whether it be in sentence form, a comic strip, point form notes, hieroglyphs, it doesn’t matter as long as it’s out and on the paper.

To be honest, you could mind map this. Something like “Marketing” could have 20 different offshoots to it with subsections

Here are some areas you may be considering:

• Marketing• Videos• Workshops• Social Media
• Website• Communities• Joint Ventures• Blog Posts
• Courses• Business Plan• Branding• Client Attraction
• Growth• Employees• Volunteering

Step 2: Narrow it Down

Just pick one of the ideas from the exercise above. This is going to be the big idea.

Ask yourself: “Which idea will have the biggest impact on your business or life?” Write this down.

Purpose or Goal: What is the purpose of this idea? Does it fit in with your businesses mission, vision and values?

Write about each of these questions with your thoughts on it. You’d be surprised what you could come up with, sometimes it’s a mental block that could mean that the things that are stressing you our aren’t in line with what you’re looking to accomplish, or that you need to take a step back and realign with yourself. Honestly, you won’t know until you sit down a figure it out. This will help you with your idea overwhelm. Could it be that you’re simply trying to take on too many things yourself? 😉

Step 3: Make a Plan and Get it Done!

Action Steps

  • How easy will this be to implement?
  • Who can you bring on board to help you?
  • What are the specific steps required to put this idea into action?

Think about these questions – I hear them a lot because it’s typically where people come to us looking for help, as they know they need marketing or a website, but it’s not in their wheelhouse and need to outsource to someone else that DOES have a strength in that area.

Schedule Your Idea

Set goals and milestones by putting each individual action step into your calendar. The great thing about this exercise is that you can repeat it for any big ideas you want to implement.
